Overview

Twenty-four portraits of invisible people.

Focus pullers, grips, drivers, caterers — the names audiences never learn. We photographed twenty-four of our own crew in the prep bay, each holding the tool of their trade, lit like leading actors.

The series opened our spring exhibition and now tours rental houses across the state as a reminder of who really makes the image.

Approach

One light, one tool, no retouching.

A single hard source, a dark backdrop, and strict instructions to keep every wrinkle and scar. Subjects chose their own tool — clapboards, C-stands, headphones — and their own ten minutes of fame.

  • — Single-source dramatic lighting
  • — Zero-retouch black and white finish
  • — Touring exhibition and catalogue
